Character-level interaction in multimodal computer-assisted transcription of text images
“The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-21257-4_85To date, automatic handwriting text recognition systems are far from being perfect and heavy human intervention is often required to check and correct the results of such systems. As an alternative, an interactive framework that integrates the human knowledge into the transcription process has been presented in previous works. In this work, multimodal interaction at character-level is studied. Until now, multimodal interaction had been studied only at whole-word level. However, character-level pen-stroke interactions may lead to more ergonomic and friendly interfaces. The X-ray nebula around the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC4388
We report on X-ray emission from the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC4388 observed with
the Chandra X-ray Observatory. A hard X-ray peak is found at the position of
the active nucleus suggested by optical and radio observations. Extended soft
X-ray emission correlates well with the ionization cone found in optical line
emission. A large soft X-ray extension is found up to 16 kpc to the north of
the galaxy. Photoionized gas with low ionization parameters (xi<3) appears to
be the likely explanation of this emission. The same ionized gas clouds could
be responsible for the optical [OIII] emission. Fe K line emission from cold

Relativistic description of electron scattering on the deuteron
Within a quasipotential framework a relativistic analysis is presented of the
deuteron current. Assuming that the singularities from the nucleon propagators
are important, a so-called equal time approximation of the current is
constructed. This is applied to both elastic and inelastic electron scattering.
As dynamical model the relativistic one boson exchange model is used.
Reasonable agreement is found with a previous relativistic calculation of the
elastic electromagnetic form factors of the deuteron. For the unpolarized
inelastic electron scattering effects of final state interactions and
relativistic corrections to the structure functions are considered in the
impulse approximation. Two specific kinematic situations are studied as

Relativistic effects and quasipotential equations
We compare the scattering amplitude resulting from the several quasipotential
equations for scalar particles. We consider the Blankenbecler-Sugar, Spectator,
Thompson, Erkelenz-Holinde and Equal-Time equations, which were solved
numerically without decomposition into partial waves. We analyze both
negative-energy state components of the propagators and retardation effects. We
found that the scattering solutions of the Spectator and the Equal-Time
equations are very close to the nonrelativistic solution even at high energies.
The overall relativistic effect increases with the energy. The width of the
band for the relative uncertainty in the real part of the scattering
matrix, due to different dynamical equations, is largest for
backward-scattering angles where it can be as large as 40%.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
NN Core Interactions and Differential Cross Sections from One Gluon Exchange
We derive nonstrange baryon-baryon scattering amplitudes in the
nonrelativistic quark model using the ``quark Born diagram" formalism. This
approach describes the scattering as a single interaction, here the
one-gluon-exchange (OGE) spin-spin term followed by constituent interchange,
with external nonrelativistic baryon wavefunctions attached to the scattering
diagrams to incorporate higher-twist wavefunction effects. The short-range
repulsive core in the NN interaction has previously been attributed to this
spin-spin interaction in the literature; we find that these perturbative
constituent-interchange diagrams do indeed predict repulsive interactions in
all I,S channels of the nucleon-nucleon system, and we compare our results for
the equivalent short-range potentials to the core potentials found by other
authors using nonperturbative methods. We also apply our perturbative
techniques to the N and systems: Some
channels are found to have attractive core potentials and may accommodate
``molecular" bound states near threshold. Finally we use our Born formalism to
calculate the NN differential cross section, which we compare with experimental
results for unpolarised proton-proton elastic scattering. We find that several
familiar features of the experimental differential cross section are reproduced

Matrix-Variate Discriminative Analysis, Integrative Hypothesis Testing, and Geno-Pheno A5 Analyzer
Abstract. A general perspective is provided on both on hypothesis testing and discriminative analyses, by which matrix-variate discriminative analyses are pro-posed based on the matrix normal distribution, featured by a bi-linear extension of Fisher linear discriminant analysis and a further extension to binary variables. Moreover, a general formulation is proposed for integrative hypothesis testing and five typical categories are summarized. Furthermore, major techniques for varia-ble selection are briefly elaborated. Finally, taking analyses of gene expression and exome sequencing as examples, we further propose a general procedure called Geno-Pheno A5 Analyzer for integrative discriminant analysis
The upgrade of the ALICE TPC with GEMs and continuous readout
The upgrade of the ALICE TPC will allow the experiment to cope with the high interaction rates foreseen for the forthcoming Run 3 and Run 4 at the CERN LHC. In this article, we describe the design of new readout chambers and front-end electronics, which are driven by the goals of the experiment. Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors arranged in stacks containing four GEMs each, and continuous readout electronics based on the SAMPA chip, an ALICE development, are replacing the previous elements. The construction of these new elements, together with their associated quality control procedures, is explained in detail. Finally, the readout chamber and front-end electronics cards replacement, together with the commissioning of the detector prior to installation in the experimental cavern, are presented. After a nine-year period of R&D, construction, and assembly, the upgrade of the TPC was completed in 2020.publishedVersio
